Project Description

Uni Construction represented the General Contractor during the preconstruction phase of LACMA’s Levitated Mass project. This unique artwork features a 340-ton rock hovering above a viewing pathway. Our preconstruction efforts ensured the project’s feasibility, considering both the artistic vision and the logistical challenges of transporting and installing the enormous rock.

Project Scope

Reviewing Design Plans and Specifications: Evaluating the architectural and engineering documents for the Levitated Mass project, including the foundation, support structure, and viewing pathway.

Cost Estimating & Budgeting: Developing detailed cost estimates for all aspects of the project, including materials, construction activities, and the critical heavy haul transportation of the rock.

Value Engineering: Collaborating with the design team to explore cost-saving measures or alternative construction methods while ensuring the structural integrity and artistic impact of the Levitated Mass.

Permitting Strategy: Developing a plan to obtain necessary permits and approvals from the city for construction activities and the transportation route for the massive rock.

Heavy Haul Logistics Coordination: A crucial aspect of this project involved planning and coordinating the transportation of the 340-ton rock. This included:

  • Identifying a suitable route with sufficient weight capacity for the oversized load.
  • Obtaining necessary permits and coordinating with local authorities for road closures or traffic control during transport.
  • Selecting and collaborating with specialized heavy haul carriers experienced in moving oversized objects.

Communication & Collaboration: Maintaining open communication and collaboration with the design team, engineers, and subcontractors throughout preconstruction to ensure everyone is aligned on the project goals, budget, and the unique logistical requirements.

Project Challenges & Solutions
